InPage to Unicode
Convert InPage to Unicode and get Urdu out of old InPage files. Copy a story or a chapter from InPage 2 or older, paste it here, and read it back as Unicode Urdu, right to left. English words, 450 and #12 stay as they were, and Urdu digits come back in reading order.

Why people use this tool
For Urdu newspaper archives, books and supplements typeset in InPage before it read Unicode.
Nothing to install on the archive PC
It runs in a current browser, a phone's included, so the old office computer that holds the files needs no converter program.
Word file set right to left
The Word download has right-to-left paragraphs and marks the Urdu runs as Urdu (Pakistan), so the chapter opens ready to edit.
Numbers put back in order
InPage stores each run of Urdu digits back to front. The converter turns every run round, so a Hijri year reads correctly, while Latin 450 and #12 stay as typed.
Stays in your browser
The conversion runs on your device. Your text is not uploaded to our server.
English left alone
Words in English, numbers and email addresses are kept as they are. Only the old-font text is changed.
Words to check are marked
If a word does not look like a real word after conversion, it is underlined so you can check it.
How to convert InPage to Unicode
Four steps, all of them in your browser. Nothing to install and no account.
Copy from InPage.
Open the old .inp file in InPage, select a story or one chapter, and copy it.
Paste it here.
The Unicode Urdu appears in the second box, reading right to left in a Naskh face.
Look at the marked words.
An underlined word holds a code the converter was unsure of, such as the second ئ code some typists used. Compare it with the page in InPage.
Copy or download.
Paste the result into Facebook or a website, or take the Word download with right-to-left paragraphs and an Urdu font already set.
What's kept, and what to check
The text comes across as it was typed. A few things are worth a look before you use it.
What's kept
What comes across unchanged
English, 450 and #.
Text typed in InPage's English font is plain ASCII, so it is copied as it is, in reading order.
Paragraphs.
Every InPage paragraph becomes a right-to-left paragraph.
Urdu letters.
ہ and ھ, ں and ن stay apart, and the one hamza key becomes ئ or ء by its place in the word.
Vowel marks.
Zabar, zer, pesh, shadda and the standing alef in Qur'an quotations stay on their letter.
Check before use
Check these before you publish
Your first paste.
The table was read from .inp files. Whether InPage's clipboard carries the same codes is not confirmed yet, so compare one paragraph with the page first.
Marked words.
An underline means a second code for a letter, or a code with no clear reading, such as a sign set in a symbol font. Check it against InPage.
Spelling changes.
مےں typed with ے mid-word comes out as میں, and ا with a separate madda as آ. That is the usual Unicode spelling, though it differs from the file's codes.
Any Urdu font shows Unicode Urdu. For the Nastaliq look InPage gave the page, set a Nastaliq font such as Jameel Noori Nastaleeq yourself; we don't supply one.
Tricky letters we test
What people say other InPage to Unicode converters get wrong. Every row went through this page's engine when the site was built.
| InPage keys | Unicode | What makes it hard |
|---|---|---|
| InPage keys×ÒÔѧ | Unicode۱۴۲۷ھ | The file keeps the year right to left, as ×ÒÔÑ before §; turned round into reading order it is ۱۴۲۷ھ. |
| InPage keys‚„‹£ | Unicodeابتداء | The hamza key £ at the end of ابتداء is ء, but before a letter the same key is ئ, so the converter looks at what follows. |
| InPage keysŸ¥¡ | Unicodeمیں | Files type میں with ے in the middle, Ÿ¥¡, since InPage draws it like ی there. It comes out as ی, the spelling Word and search expect. |
| InPage keys‡¶ | Unicodeجاؤ | ؤ in جاؤ is the single code ¶, not و followed by a loose hamza. |
| InPage keys“ŸŽ¦ #12 | Unicodeشمارہ #12 | #12 is plain ASCII in the file and comes back untouched after شمارہ, with no digit swapped for an Urdu one. |
| InPage keys¤¦ Š‚Ž BBC Urdu ’¥ ž¤ £¤ | Unicodeیہ خبر BBC Urdu سے لی گئی | BBC Urdu is stored as English text, so it is kept as typed and sits in its place inside the right-to-left line. |
| InPage keys‚§£¤ | Unicodeبھائی | § is the do-chashmi ھ of بھائی and ¦ is ہ; reading one as the other would split the aspirate into a separate h. |
| InPage keys ¦¤¡ | Unicodeنہیں | A no-break space in the file is the letter ن, not a gap, so نہیں stays one word, with ں at its end. |
Questions
Answers to common questions about InPage to Unicode.
Why does InPage text turn into symbols in Word?
InPage before version 3 stores Urdu in its own codes, not Unicode, so other programs show them as symbols such as ¦¥. After InPage to Unicode conversion the Urdu reads in Word, in browsers and on phones.
I use InPage 3 or later. Do I need this?
Probably not, since InPage 3 and later already store Unicode. If a paste still looks wrong, try it here: a notice says so when the text is Unicode already.
Can I open an .inp file here?
Not yet. Open the file in InPage, copy the text and paste it here. There is no date for reading .inp files directly.
My book runs to hundreds of pages. Can I convert it?
Yes, a chapter at a time. A single paste has a size limit, and a chapter is easier to proofread against the printed book.
How do I get the Nastaliq look back?
Install a Nastaliq font such as Jameel Noori Nastaleeq and set it on the text. Unicode keeps the letters, not the typeface, and we don't supply fonts.
Is my archive uploaded anywhere?
No. The conversion happens in your browser, and the Urdu you paste stays on your own computer.
