Unicode to InPage
Convert Unicode to InPage codes for Urdu pages still set in older InPage. Paste a story typed in Word, on a news site or in WhatsApp. Urdu digits come out in the right-to-left order InPage files keep them in, while English words, 450 or #12 stay as typed.

Why people use this tool
For composers who set Urdu newspaper and book pages in InPage 2 and receive their copy in Unicode.
No converter program to crash
People who use offline Unicode-to-InPage programs report Run-time error 339 and out-of-memory stops. Here the conversion runs in the browser tab, with nothing to install.
English, 450 and #12 kept
Latin digits, the # sign and English names stay in their own ASCII run. They are never mapped onto Urdu codes, which is where pasted prices and issue numbers usually go wrong.
Urdu digits in InPage order
An .inp file holds each run of Urdu digits back to front. The converter writes them that way, so a year typed in Unicode reads correctly once InPage draws it.
Stays in your browser
The conversion runs on your device. Your text is not uploaded to our server.
English left alone
Words in English, numbers and email addresses are kept as they are. Only the old-font text is changed.
Words to check are marked
If a word does not look like a real word after conversion, it is underlined so you can check it.
How to convert Unicode to InPage
Four steps, all of them in your browser. Nothing to install and no account.
Paste the Urdu copy.
Paste a story, or one chapter of a book, from Word, a news site or WhatsApp into the right-to-left box.
Read it back in Urdu.
How it will look turns the codes back into Urdu, so a missing letter shows up here rather than on the page. Raw text shows the codes themselves.
Copy or take the .txt.
Copy puts plain text on the clipboard. The .txt download is for InPage's text import, and an .rtf is in the menu as well.
Try one paragraph in InPage.
Nobody has pasted this output into InPage yet, so set one paragraph first and look at its digits and English words before the rest.
What's kept, and what to check
The text comes across as it was typed. A few things are worth a look before you use it.
What's kept
Carried into the InPage codes
English and Latin digits.
Copied as plain ASCII, which is how InPage files store text in their English font.
Paragraphs.
Each paragraph of the story stays a paragraph after the import.
Letters InPage keeps apart.
ہ and ھ, ں and ن each get their own code. ئ and ء share InPage's single hamza key, as they do in the files.
Vowel marks.
Zabar, zer, pesh and shadda follow their letter in the order InPage files type them.
Check before use
Look at these in InPage before the page is set
Dates and numbers.
Urdu digits are written in reverse on purpose. Check that a date or two reads right once InPage shows it.
Underlined letters.
A character InPage has no code for, such as the Arabic ڤ, stays underlined. Type it in InPage instead.
The first paste.
Nobody has yet confirmed that InPage's own paste takes these codes as its files do, so test a short paragraph first.
Here the InPage codes look like stray Latin symbols, and a few look blank. That is expected: How it will look shows the Urdu they stand for.
Tricky letters we test
What composers say other Unicode-to-InPage converters mangle. Each row came out of this converter when the site was built.
| Unicode | InPage keys | What makes it hard |
|---|---|---|
| Unicode۲۰۲۴ | InPage keysÔÒÐÒ | Unicode keeps ۲۰۲۴ in reading order, but InPage files store each run of Urdu digits right to left, so it goes out as ÔÒÐÒ. |
| Unicodeقیمت 450 روپے | InPage keys›¤Ÿ„ 450 Ž¢ƒ¥ | 450 is in the English font in InPage files, so it stays plain ASCII between قیمت and روپے rather than taking Urdu digit codes. |
| Unicodeشمارہ #12 | InPage keys“ŸŽ¦ #12 | The # and the 12 go across as ASCII; only شمارہ is turned into InPage letter codes. |
| Unicodeیہ خبر BBC Urdu سے لی گئی | InPage keys¤¦ Š‚Ž BBC Urdu ’¥ ž¤ £¤ | BBC Urdu stays in Latin letters inside the right-to-left line, and گئی still gets the hamza key £ before its ی. |
| Unicodeبھائی | InPage keys‚§£¤ | ھ, the do-chashmi he that makes بھ an aspirate, has its own code §, kept apart from ہ. |
| Unicodeنہیں | InPage keys ¦¤¡ | ں gets ¡, while ن sits on the no-break space code: it looks like a gap, but it has to stay inside the word. |
| Unicodeجائے | InPage keys‡£¥ | InPage has one hamza key: the ئ of جائے goes out as £, the same code a final ء gets. |
| Unicodeپاکستان | InPage keysƒœ’„ | پ and the Urdu ک get InPage codes of their own, ƒ and œ. The Arabic ك that some websites use is written as œ too. |
Questions
Answers to common questions about Unicode to InPage.
Why does Unicode Urdu break when I paste it into InPage 2?
InPage before version 3 keeps Urdu in its own character codes, one per letter, and does not read Unicode. Convert Unicode to InPage codes here first, then paste them or import the .txt.
Which InPage versions is this for?
InPage 2 and older, and templates that were built in them. InPage 3 and later read Unicode Urdu, so there you can paste your original text straight in.
Will my numbers and # signs change?
Latin digits, # and English words go across as plain ASCII, the way InPage files hold their English font. Urdu digits such as ۲۰۲۴ get InPage's digit codes, written in reverse as the files store them. Turn off Keep 0–9 as English digits if the page should print 450 in Urdu digits too.
Can I convert a whole book at once?
Work through it a chapter at a time. One paste has a size limit, and a chapter is easier to check against the manuscript before it goes onto the page.
Why are there gaps and dots in the Raw text tab?
InPage stores ن on the no-break space, so it looks like a gap. ا, ذ, ڑ, ز and گ sit on five codes that Windows-1252 has no symbol for, which a browser draws as a dot or leaves blank. They are all still in the text: Copy and the .txt keep them, and How it will look shows the letters.
Is the story I paste sent anywhere?
No. The converter runs inside this browser tab, and the copy you paste never reaches our server.
