Nudi to Unicode

Convert Nudi to Unicode when an old circular or letter has to go into e-office. Karnataka moved official work to Unicode in 2012, but files typed in Nudi 5.0 and earlier still hold the old key codes. Paste the text here and copy out Kannada Unicode.

Why people use this tool

The Unicode text reads on the next officer's computer and on any phone, with no Nudi font installed.

For Karnataka office files

Circulars, orders and registers typed before Nudi 6.0 become text e-office can take.

Baraha files too

Text typed in BRH Kannada, Baraha's old font, uses the Nudi keys and converts the same way.

Digits the way the register needs

Dates and file numbers come out as 0–9 by default. One switch gives ೦–೯ instead.

Stays in your browser

The conversion runs on your device. Your text is not uploaded to our server.

English left alone

Words in English, numbers and email addresses are kept as they are. Only the old-font text is changed.

Words to check are marked

If a word does not look like a real word after conversion, it is underlined so you can check it.

HOW IT WORKS

How to convert Nudi to Unicode

Four steps, all of them in your browser. Nothing to install and no account.

01

Copy from the old file.

Open the circular in Word, or open its PDF, then select and copy the Kannada.

02

Paste it in the left box.

Unicode Kannada fills the right box while you paste. Nudi and Baraha text read the same way.

03

Check the marked words.

Underlined words did not convert cleanly. Compare them with the printed circular, and check the digits switch.

04

Take it to e-office.

Copy the Kannada for an e-office note or email, or download a Word file in Nirmala UI.

What's kept, and what to check

The text comes across as it was typed. A few things are worth a look before you use it.

What's kept

What comes across

Lines of the circular.

Headings, numbered points and paragraph breaks stay on their own lines.

Conjuncts.

Letters with a subscript form, like the second ನ in ಕನ್ನಡ, come across as one conjunct.

English words and register columns.

English is copied unchanged, and tabs keep each column in place.

Check before use

Look at these before you file

Names and file numbers.

Check them against the original, and check the digits switch.

Tables from Word.

Pasted tables come across as text with tabs. Use Copy as table for Excel.

Unicode Kannada shows in Nirmala UI, Tunga or Nudi 6.0 and later. The Word file uses Nirmala UI, which every Windows 10 and 11 computer has. You do not need the old Nudi font to read it.

QUESTIONS

Questions

Answers to common questions about Nudi to Unicode.

How do I know if a file needs Nudi to Unicode Kannada conversion?

Open it on a computer without old Nudi. If you see Latin letters and symbols such as PÀ£ÀßqÀ, it needs converting. Files made with Nudi 6.0 or later are already Unicode.

Does Baraha to Unicode work here too?

Yes. Baraha's old Kannada fonts, such as BRH Kannada, use the same keys as Nudi, so their text converts the same way. The Nudi or Baraha menu only names the font; the Kannada you get is the same.

Can I convert a Nudi PDF?

Government PDFs made from Nudi files still hold Nudi text: copy it from your PDF reader and paste it here. Spaces that land inside words are closed up for you. If the paste shows boxes or odd symbols, the PDF holds no Nudi text this page can read.

Will dates and file numbers stay as 0–9?

Yes, by default. "Keep 0–9 as English digits" under the result is on. If the printed circular shows ೦–೯, turn it off and the digits come out in Kannada.

Will e-office accept the converted text?

The output is standard Unicode Kannada, the format the state set for e-governance. Check names and numbers before you submit.

Is my file sent anywhere?

No. The conversion runs in this browser tab, so the circular's text never reaches our server.
