Why people use this tool
For the clerk, teacher or candidate handed Hindi that shows as English letters, with no word on which font it was typed in.
Tells you the font
Many people only know the text "shows as English". Paste it and you'll see if it's Kruti Dev, Chanakya or already Unicode.
Old font to old font
Kruti Dev to Chanakya works too. The text goes through Unicode on the way, so matras stay right.
Asks on short text
A few words can fit two fonts. Then you choose instead of getting a wrong guess.
Stays in your browser
The conversion runs on your device. Your text is not uploaded to our server.
English left alone
Words in English, numbers and email addresses are kept as they are. Only the old-font text is changed.
Words to check are marked
If a word does not look like a real word after conversion, it is underlined so you can check it.
How to change a Hindi font
Four steps, all of them in your browser. Nothing to install and no account.
Paste your Hindi.
Text from a Word letter, an Excel sheet, an email or a message, or selectable text copied out of a PDF.
See which font it is.
A line below your text names the font, for example Detected: Walkman Chanakya. Wrong guess? Choose the right font in the From menu.
Pick where it should go.
Unicode for portals, email and phones. Kruti Dev, DevLys or Walkman Chanakya for an old template.
Copy or download.
A Word file for Unicode, Kruti Dev and DevLys. A rich text file for Chanakya, ready for a CorelDraw layout.
What's kept, and what to check
The text comes across as it was typed. A few things are worth a look before you use it.
What's kept
What comes across
Paragraphs, lines and tabs.
Kept in place, so a register copied from Excel still lines up.
English words and numbers.
Left as they are. A roll number or an email address is not read as Hindi.
Matras, reph and half letters.
Moved into the order each font needs: the short i before its letter in the old fonts, after it in Unicode.
Check before use
Worth checking
The detected font.
Read the first line of the result. Odd words mean another old font: choose it in the From menu and look again.
Kruti Dev or Walkman Chanakya.
A line with no Q tail in it, such as osQ, reads the same in both. If the text came from a newspaper layout, set From to Walkman Chanakya.
Headings.
A heading may be in another font from the body text. Convert it on its own.
For an old-font result, the old font must be installed where you open the file. We don't supply these fonts.
Tricky letters we test
A quick test of any Hindi converter: शासन, विषय, शिक्षा, ज्ञापन. Here they are in Kruti Dev, with one Walkman and one old Chanakya word, all run through this page's own converter at build time.
| Font | Old-font keys | Unicode | What makes it hard |
|---|---|---|---|
| FontKruti Dev 010 | Old-font keys'kklu | Unicodeशासन | 'k is श, so the word opens with an apostrophe. A converter that keeps the quote as punctuation loses the first letter. |
| FontKruti Dev 010 | Old-font keysfo"k; | Unicodeविषय | Shift makes the difference: "k is ष, where the plain apostrophe would give श. The short i f stands before o and moves after व. |
| FontKruti Dev 010 | Old-font keysf'k{kk | Unicodeशिक्षा | The f in front belongs to श, not to the half form '. {k then gives क्ष, three characters in Unicode. |
| FontKruti Dev 010 | Old-font keysi= | Unicodeपत्र | = looks like maths but is the whole त्र, so पत्र is two keys: i and =. |
| FontKruti Dev 010 | Old-font keysKkiu | Unicodeज्ञापन | ज्ञ is not typed as ज plus ञ. It is capital K alone, which Unicode spells out as three characters. |
| FontKruti Dev 010 | Old-font keys,s'o;kZ | Unicodeऐश्वर्या | ऐ starts with a comma, ,s. The reph Z is typed after ;k and has to move in front of य. |
| FontKruti Dev 010 | Old-font keysfo|ky; | Unicodeविद्यालय | Two changes in six keys: the short i f moves after व, and the pipe | opens into द, virama and य. |
| FontWalkman Chanakya | Old-font keysoqQN | Unicodeकुछ | Before the u or e matra (कु, के), Walkman Chanakya types क as o, the key for व, plus a tail Q. That Q is how the page tells Walkman from Kruti Dev. |
| FontChanakya (old / government) | Old-font keysçßlæÜØ | Unicodeविद्यालय | Old government Chanakya has its own layout: the same word is çßlæÜØ, with the short i ç first and द्य on l. |
Questions
Answers to common questions about Hindi Font Converter.
How can I tell which Hindi font my text is in?
Paste a few lines and read the line under the box. The page tries every font it knows and names the one whose reading gives real Hindi words. Text like dk;Z for कार्य is Kruti Dev or DevLys. If osQ turns up for के, it is Walkman Chanakya, which adds a Q tail to the Kruti Dev keys.
What is the difference between Kruti Dev and Unicode?
Kruti Dev text is stored as English key codes, and only the Kruti Dev font draws them as Hindi. Unicode stores the Hindi letters, so any phone or computer shows them and search engines can find them. That is why a Hindi font change from Kruti Dev to Mangal in Word gives nonsense: the codes have to be converted first.
Can I convert Kruti Dev to Chanakya?
Yes. Paste the Kruti Dev text, set To to Walkman Chanakya, and download the .rtf for your CorelDraw page. The text passes through Unicode, so this works as a Kruti Dev converter between two old fonts, and the Walkman Q tails are added where Chanakya needs them.
Why do Kruti Dev and DevLys give the same result?
DevLys 010 was drawn on the Kruti Dev 010 key layout. ज्ञ is K and श is 'k in both, so one table reads both and the page reports the text as Kruti Dev 010 or DevLys 010. When a template needs the DevLys name on the text, pick DevLys 010 under To: Copy and the Word file then carry that font.
My font isn't in this Hindi font converter. What now?
A font joins the list only after it reads real files correctly. Paste Shree Lipi or Akruti, common with Marathi print shops, and the page names the font instead of converting it. The converter for Marathi fonts reads both. Text in any other font can come out as wrong Hindi here, so compare the result with the original before you use it.
Why does the page ask me to choose a font?
Walkman Chanakya uses the Kruti Dev keys for most letters, so a short line can read as proper Hindi in both. Then two buttons appear, and this Chanakya font converter waits for you. Choose the font the file came in, or paste a longer passage.
