Stays in your browser
The conversion runs on your device. Your text is not uploaded to our server.
English left alone

Words to check are marked
If a word does not look like a real word after conversion, it is underlined so you can check it.
How to convert Shree Lipi to Unicode
Four steps, all of them in your browser. Nothing to install and no account.
Add the old text.
Open the page in Word or your DTP program, select the Marathi and copy it. Text copied out of an old PDF works too.
Read the Marathi.
It appears on the right in Unicode. English words like PMC stay as typed. Numbers come out as ०–९ unless the digits switch is set to English.
Check the marked words.
A marked word may be English typed in a Shree-Dev font, or a sign the font has no letter for. If most words look wrong, the text is probably in another font.
Copy or download.
Copy it into the website, WhatsApp or e-office, or download a Word file with Mangal already set.
What's kept, and what to check
The text comes across as it was typed. A few things are worth a look before you use it.

What comes across
Paragraphs.
Line and paragraph breaks stay in place.
Marathi letters.
ळ, the eyelash ra and conjuncts come out as Unicode letters. A double danda typed as && becomes ॥.
English words.
Words like PMC stay as typed. Numbers come out as ०–९ unless you set the digits switch to English.
Check before use
Look at these
The font name.
Shree Lipi has many fonts, and Akruti or Kruti Dev text looks similar in a file. If most of the result is wrong, check which font the file used.
Digits.
Most Shree-Dev fonts draw ०–९ on the number keys, so the result uses Marathi digits. SHREE-DEV7-0708E draws 0–9, as in MSCE papers: switch digits to English for that text.
Headlines.
Headlines set in a display font may use other keys. Convert them separately and read them once.
Every Windows computer can show it in Mangal or Nirmala UI, and so can any phone. Copy and the Word download already put Mangal on the Marathi.
Tricky letters we test
Marathi pages set in Shree Lipi lean on these letters. Each row is converted by this page when the site is built.
| Shree Lipi keys | Unicode | What makes it hard |
|---|---|---|
| Shree Lipi keysgmè¶m | Unicodeसार्या | è is the eyelash ra, one glyph for three Unicode characters: र, a virama and a zero-width joiner. Drop the joiner and the ra turns back into a plain reph on top of the य. |
| Shree Lipi keysemioMr doi | Unicodeशाळेची वेळ | The i key is ळ, typed twice here. Alone, a short ळ word can pass for English keys, so the row uses a phrase. |
| Shree Lipi keysjoÌ | Unicodeक्षेत्र | Two keys hold whole conjuncts: j is क्ष and Ì is त्र. The o between them is the e-sign of क्षे. |
| Shree Lipi keyskmZ | Unicodeज्ञान | A lower-case k stands for all of ज्ञ. Unicode needs ज, a virama and ञ for it. |
| Shree Lipi keys{dÚmb¶ | Unicodeविद्यालय | Ú draws द्य as one shape. The short-i hook { is typed before व and moves after it. |
| Shree Lipi keysemgZ | Unicodeशासन | Lower-case e gives श and g gives स, two hissing letters in one word. ष sits on yet another key, so none of the three may be mixed up. |
| Shree Lipi keysgwf‘m | Unicodeसुषमा | Lower-case f is ष, next to श in the font. The w after g is the u-sign of सु. |
| Shree Lipi keys‘hmamï´> | Unicodeमहाराष्ट्र | ï is ष्ट and ´ adds the ra below it. > only adds width after the letter, so it is dropped. |
Questions
Answers to common questions about Shree Lipi to Unicode.
Why does text from my Shree Lipi file show as symbols elsewhere?
Shree Lipi keeps Marathi letters on the codes of English keys and lets the font draw them. A phone or computer without the font shows those codes, so मराठी turns into ‘amR>r. Unicode gives every Marathi letter its own code, which any device can show.
Which Shree Lipi fonts does this support?
We checked it on pages set in SHREE-DEV7-0708, 0708E, 0714 and 0715, the older SHREE-DEV-0708, and the ITRFK-Dev7 fonts newspapers use. They all put each letter on the same key, so Shree Dev to Unicode is the same job here. Akruti fonts use other keys.
Can I convert Unicode back to Shree Lipi?
Yes. This Shree Lipi to Unicode converter also runs the other way: press the swap button and paste Unicode Marathi. An eyelash ra typed on a phone as ऱ्या becomes the same Shree Lipi glyph. The Marathi font converter does this too, and handles Kruti Dev.
I copied the text out of an old PDF and some words have gaps. Can it fix that?
Some of them. Where the PDF put a space right after the short i sign, as it often does in महानगरपालिका, the word is joined back and the page says how many it joined. Other gaps stay, so read the result once.
Does it keep the eyelash ra in words like सार्या?
Yes. The eyelash ra is written the Unicode way, with a zero-width joiner after र्, so the word keeps its look and does not become सार्या. It is one of the tricky letters listed above.
Does it work for Hindi text in Shree Lipi?
Yes. Hindi and Marathi share the keys. The result is marked as Marathi for Word and screen readers, which does not change a single letter.
