Why people use this tool
Gurdwara newsletters and office notices typed in Asees, turned into Punjabi your WhatsApp group can read.
Ready for WhatsApp
Unicode Gurmukhi shows on every phone. Your group sees Punjabi, not codes or English letters.
Sihari and ਆ fixed
Asees stores sihari before the letter and builds ਆ from two parts. Both are corrected.
Share from your phone
Paste on your phone, tap Share, and pick the group. No app to install.
Stays in your browser
The conversion runs on your device. Your text is not uploaded to our server.
English left alone
Words in English, numbers and email addresses are kept as they are. Only the old-font text is changed.
Words to check are marked
If a word does not look like a real word after conversion, it is underlined so you can check it.
How to convert Asees to Unicode
Four steps, all of them in your browser. Nothing to install and no account.
Add the Asees text.
Copy it from the notice in Word, or from the PDF, and paste it into the first box.
Read the Gurmukhi.
It appears below the box on a phone, beside it on a computer.
Check the marked words.
Look at underlined words, especially names and dotted letters like ਸ਼.
Share it.
On a phone, tap Share and pick your WhatsApp group. On a computer, copy it or download a Word file.
What's kept, and what to check
The text comes across as it was typed. A few things are worth a look before you use it.
What's kept
What comes across
Lines and paragraphs.
Kept as typed, so a notice keeps its heading, date line and signature.
Gurmukhi signs.
ਪੰਜਾਬੀ keeps its tippi, ਪੱਕਾ its addak and ਜ਼ਿਲ੍ਹਾ its dot and small ਹ.
English and numbers.
Left unchanged. Asees files type numbers as 0 to 9, and they stay that way.
Check before use
Look at these
Names.
Check people's and place names.
Missing dots.
Many Asees files leave the dot off ਗ਼ or ਫ਼. The converter keeps the letter as it was typed.
Other fonts.
If much of the text looks wrong, it may be AnmolLipi or another font.
Members reading the newsletter on WhatsApp need no Punjabi font: their phone draws the Gurmukhi. For office printouts, the Word download already uses Raavi.
Tricky letters we test
Punjabi letters that old-font converters often get wrong. Each pair is checked by this converter when the page is built.
| Asees keys | Unicode | What makes it hard |
|---|---|---|
| Asees keysfeogk | Unicodeਕਿਰਪਾ | The sihari key f is typed before e, the ਕ it belongs to. Unicode stores ਿ after the letter, so it moves. |
| Asees keysr[od[nkok | Unicodeਗੁਰਦੁਆਰਾ | n is the bare ਅ and k the kanna after it. They become the one letter ਆ, not ਅ plus ਾ. |
| Asees keysPfjo | Unicodeਸ਼ਹਿਰ | Capital P is Asees's own key for ਸ਼. It comes out as ਸ plus the dot, and the f before j moves after ਹ. |
| Asees keysyapo d/Dh | Unicodeਖ਼ਬਰ ਦੇਣੀ | Files type ਖ਼ as y for ਖ and a for the dot. Alone, yapo could be English; beside d/Dh it reads as Punjabi. |
| Asees keysIwhB | Unicodeਜ਼ਮੀਨ | Capital I is ਜ਼ in Asees, not an English I. w gives ਮ and h the ੀ sign. |
| Asees keysfIbQk | Unicodeਜ਼ਿਲ੍ਹਾ | f sits in front of I, and Q hangs ਹ under ਲ. The sihari lands after ਜ਼, dot and all. |
| Asees keysgqXkB | Unicodeਪ੍ਰਧਾਨ | q after g is the small ਰ under ਪ. In Unicode that takes a halant between them: ਪ੍ਰ. |
| Asees keysgZek | Unicodeਪੱਕਾ | Capital Z is the addak ੱ. It stays in front of e, the ਕ it doubles. |
Questions
Answers to common questions about Asees to Unicode.
Why does my Asees file turn into codes on WhatsApp?
The file never held Punjabi letters, only the Latin keys the typist pressed. On a PC with Asees installed those keys look like Gurmukhi. A phone has no Asees, so the group reads ;fs ;qh nekb where you typed ਸਤਿ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਅਕਾਲ. Converted text carries the real Gurmukhi letters.
Is Asees to Raavi the same as Asees to Unicode?
Yes. Raavi is a Unicode Punjabi font. Convert here, and the copied text and the Word download already use Raavi.
Is Asees the same as AnmolLipi?
No. The two fonts put Gurmukhi on different keys: the k key gives ਾ in Asees but ਕ in AnmolLipi. If most words come out wrong here, the text is probably AnmolLipi. Try the Anmol Lipi to Unicode converter.
The notice only exists as a PDF. Will that work?
Yes, if the PDF has real text in it. Select the Punjabi in your PDF reader, copy it and paste it here. Gazette and assembly PDFs often break a word like ਜ਼ਿਲ੍ਹਾ in two, and the pieces are put back together. A PDF made from a photo of the page has no text to copy.
Can I do this on my phone?
Yes. The Asees font converter works in your phone's browser. Paste the text, tap Share and pick your WhatsApp group or any other app.
Is my text uploaded?
No. The Punjabi is converted inside your browser, on the phone or computer you are using. Nothing you paste is sent to our server.
