Why people use this tool
For Gurmukhi files where nobody remembers the font: result sheets, gurdwara newsletters and office letters passed along for years.
Tells Asees from AnmolLipi
The two fonts put Punjabi on different keys, so a file reads right in only one. Both are tried, and the one giving real words wins.
Readable in the group chat
Old-font text reaches phones as Latin letters and signs. Unicode arrives as Gurmukhi, and Share sends it on from here.
Back into the old template
Punjabi typed on a phone can go into an Asees or AnmolLipi certificate or sheet. Copy sets that font for you.
Stays in your browser
The conversion runs on your device. Your text is not uploaded to our server.
English left alone
Words in English, numbers and email addresses are kept as they are. Only the old-font text is changed.
Words to check are marked
If a word does not look like a real word after conversion, it is underlined so you can check it.
How to convert Punjabi between fonts
Four steps, all of them in your browser. Nothing to install and no account.
Paste what you have.
From an old letter, a block of Excel cells or a forwarded message.
Check the detected font.
Look under the text box for the font's name. If it's wrong, set From to Asees or AnmolLipi yourself.
Choose the result.
Unicode for WhatsApp, email and online forms. Asees or AnmolLipi for a template still made in that font.
Share or copy.
Share on a phone opens WhatsApp and your other apps. Going back to Excel? Copy as table keeps each value in its own cell.
What's kept, and what to check
The text comes across as it was typed. A few things are worth a look before you use it.
What's kept
Kept in both directions
Rows and columns.
Tabs and line breaks come through, so pasted cells land back in their own columns.
Gurmukhi signs.
Tippi, bindi, addak and pairin letters are rebuilt for the font you pick, and sihari moves to its proper side.
English and digits.
Roll numbers, dates and English words stay as typed. Digits stay 0 to 9 unless you switch.
Check before use
Before you send it
The font it picked.
It is named under the text box. If a word you know comes out wrong, set From to the other old font.
Short English words.
Words such as in or is could be typed Punjabi too. They are underlined; keep or convert each one.
The Unicode result needs no font at all. For an Asees or AnmolLipi result, that font has to be on the PC that opens it, and we don't provide either. How it will look previews the Punjabi meanwhile.
Tricky letters we test
Words from real Asees and AnmolLipi files. This page converts each one when it is built, and a wrong result stops the build.
| Font | Old-font keys | Unicode | What makes it hard |
|---|---|---|---|
| FontAnmolLipi | Old-font keysikrpw | Unicodeਕਿਰਪਾ | In AnmolLipi ik is sihari then ਕ. The same k in Asees is the kanna, which is one of the signs that tell the two fonts apart. |
| FontAnmolLipi | Old-font keysgurduAwrw | Unicodeਗੁਰਦੁਆਰਾ | u is aunkar here, where Asees would use the bracket key. Aw then joins into the one letter ਆ. |
| FontAnmolLipi | Old-font keysSihr | Unicodeਸ਼ਹਿਰ | Capital S carries ਸ and its dot on one key. The i in front of h is the sihari that belongs after ਹ. |
| FontAnmolLipi | Old-font keyspVHweI | Unicodeਪੜ੍ਹਾਈ | Three keys in a row, VHw, give ੜ with a small ਹ below it and then kanna. Unicode needs a halant between ੜ and ਹ for that small form. |
| FontAsees | Old-font keysIwhB | Unicodeਜ਼ਮੀਨ | IwhB starts with a capital, like an English name. In Asees that capital is ਜ਼, and B at the end is ਨ. |
| FontAsees | Old-font keysgqXkB | Unicodeਪ੍ਰਧਾਨ | g is ਪ in Asees and q tucks a small ਰ under it. X is ਧ, and k closes it with kanna. |
| FontAsees | Old-font keysgZek | Unicodeਪੱਕਾ | Asees keeps the addak on Z, while AnmolLipi uses the backtick key. In gZek it falls between ਪ and ਕ, so the ਕ is said twice. |
Questions
Answers to common questions about Punjabi Font Converter.
Which fonts does this Punjabi font converter read?
Asees, AnmolLipi and Unicode Punjabi, the kind Raavi and phone keyboards write. As a Gurmukhi font converter it only offers fonts we have tested on real files. If yours is another one, send its name and a few lines through the contact page.
How can I tell Asees from AnmolLipi?
Paste a few lines and the converter reads them both ways, keeping the one that gives Punjabi words. You can spot it yourself too: ਪੰਜਾਬੀ is pMjwbI in AnmolLipi and gzikph in Asees. When a short piece fits both, the page asks you to choose.
A message shows pMjwbI instead of Punjabi. What happened?
Someone typed it in AnmolLipi on a PC that has the font, and the phone that got it does not. Paste the message here and send on the Unicode result. It needs no font on the other side.
What is Unicode Punjabi?
Gurmukhi saved as letters, not as the keys of one font. Raavi, Nirmala UI and phone keyboards all write it, so it reads anywhere. A Punjabi font change in Word, such as setting Raavi on AnmolLipi text, only shows the Latin keys. Converting is what turns them into letters.
How do I convert Unicode to Asees?
Pick Asees under To and paste your Unicode Punjabi. The result opens on How it will look, and Copy and the Word download put the Asees font on it. Asees and AnmolLipi use different keys, so choose the font your template was made in.
Is my text uploaded?
No. Trying both fonts and converting both run in this browser tab, on your phone or computer. A result sheet full of pupils' names stays on your device.
